October 11 marked the inaugural Global Hydropower Day, which provides an opportunity to shine a light on the vast human benefits that hydropower can deliver when it is developed responsibly.

As the world’s largest renewable energy source, hydropower employs more than 2 million people and has helped to improve standards of living across many regions of the world.

Anyone involved in hydropower worldwide is encouraged to participate by sharing stories on social media using the hashtags #GlobalHydropowerDay and #WithHydropower. Global Hydropower Day is organized by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) in collaboration with a coalition of progressive hydropower companies around the world.

A variety of events and initiatives are being held around the world to mark the occasion, focusing on the theme of how hydropower benefits peoples and communities. Activities include video documentaries, virtual events, a series of articles, and interviews with people who work in the industry. “Sustainable hydropower is a clean, green, modern and affordable energy source. But it does far more than simply provide power,” said Eddie Rich, chief executive officer of IHA. “Whenever governments have backed hydropower development, it has brought jobs, social investment, water supply, flood and drought management, irrigation for food and ecotourism. A net zero world is only possible with hydropower. That is why we are working with progressive organizations in the sustainable hydropower industry to highlight the positive impacts of hydropower for people and communities on Global Hydropower Day.”
