One way that utilities and energy architects are responding to the urgent need for resilient, reliable and sustainable energy is by incorporating distributed energy resources (DERs) into local microgrids.
Offering extremely reliable and weather-proof power, hydrogen fuel cells are especially suitable as independent energy sources that can complement grid power. They can kick in immediately during grid failure at any time, especially during inclement weather conditions when solar PV and wind often are not steadily available, complementing batteries in absorbing dynamic fluctuations in current. More frequent extreme weather patterns such as storms and wildfires that interfere with the ability to propagate and maintain the traditional centralized energy model are encouraging the transition to DERs and microgrids.
With zero-emission hydrogen more prevalent and cost-effective, this presentation will discuss how project engineers can reinforce microgrids with these sustainable DERs, enabling utilities to effectively respond to grid instability and peak demands while encouraging the transition away from fossil fuels to clean energy sources. As world leaders and climate activists advocate deployment and scaling up of renewable energy solutions, hydrogen-fueled DERs enable climate resilience.
