40K ComEd customers lose power during heat wave

The utility was ripped by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on social media as he said that ConEd should have been more prepared for the extremely high temperatures hitting much of the U.S. in the past week.

Consolidated Edison crews were restoring electric power to more than 21,000 customers still without it in midst of a heat wave crippling the New York region.

Some 14,000 customers in Brooklyn had to be taken out of service while ConEd dealt with system repairs due to the strain, according to the company website. Most of those should be restored sometime Monday.

The remaining 7,500 customers hit by the outage were in New York City and Westchester County.

At one point, more than 40,000 customers were without power during the heat wave. The situation frustrated Gov. Cuomo so much that he blasted the utility on Twitter.

“We’ve been through this situation w ConEd time & again & they should have been better prepared–period,” Cuomo tweeted. “I am deploying 200 State Police, 100 generators & 50 Light Towers to assist with the 30K+ power outages in BK I encourage NYers to check on neighbors- esp the elderly- tonight.”

Con Edison Customer Outreach advocates will be available to assist customers in Brooklyn at Jacob Joffe Field at Avenue K and East 58th Street, near Ralph Avenue.

The company is asking customers in the affected communities to continue to conserve electricity even after their power is restored.
