FP&L’s Dania Beach CCGT plant will feature new GE 7HA.03 turbine

GE launched the latest model of its HA series natural gas-powered turbine and did so with a new customer already lined up.

The 7HA.03 was detailed by the power generation giant, which called it the most efficient, highest-capacity 60-hertz gas turbine. The 430-MW model has a 75 MW per-minute ramp rate, 64 percent net combined-cycle efficiency and can turn down to 30 percent load while staying within emissions compliance, according to GE.

It was also revealed that Florida Power & Light will take the 7HA.03 to anchor its Dania Beach Clean Energy Center near Fort Lauderdale.

“At FPL, we’re committed to delivering reliable energy, and as part of our long-standing program of modernizing our fleet of power-generating facilities, we are replacing an aging power plant with a new, highly efficient energy center using GE’s latest gas technology,” said Bill Yeager, Executive Vice President of Engineering, Construction & Integrated Supply Chain at FPL. “By utilizing the most-advanced, most-efficient gas turbine in GE’s 60-hertz fleet, the 7HA.03 gas turbine, the FPL Dania Beach Clean Energy Center will allow FPL to continue delivering to customers the affordable energy they expect from us 24/7 to power their homes and businesses.”

The new 7HA.03 pulls much of its design from decades of overall HA experience. But some of it is new, including the first adoption of GE’s DLN 2.6e combustion system on its 60-hertz gas turbine line. Another innovation is a larger titanium R1 blade to enable greater volume of airflow and output, according to the firm.

FP&L’s Dania Beach will be a 1,160-MW CCGT plant upgrading its smaller capacity plant on the same site. The utility plans to spend $880 million on the project.

Florida’s Siting Board approved the FP&L project in November 2018. The new plant could begin operations by 2022, according to reports.
