Education, Innovation and Networking: POWERGEN International 2023 set to begin

POWERGEN International 2023 kicks off on Tuesday, February 21 in Orlando, Florida. We hope you are as excited as we are for three incredible days of innovation, education, and networking!

Before the show kicks off, dozens of attendees will have the opportunity to tour some of the most innovative energy projects in Central Florida. Monday’s full-day tour begins with a visit to Orlando Utilities Commission’s Gardenia Innovations and Operations Center. The microgrid is a test site for multiple renewable energy technologies that can be deployed throughout OUC’s grid.

Tour attendees will visit Cane Island Power Park, which is jointly owned by the Florida Municipal Power Agency and Kissimmee Utility Authority.

Attendees will also tour Cane Island Power Park, which has been recognized as a top performing natural-gas fired plant. One simple cycle and three combined-cycle units produce 740 MW of energy and operate above industry standards for reliability and efficiency.

Keynote, conference and expo

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the Keynote starts at 8:30 am and features remarks by best-selling author and megatrends expert, Andrew Winston; Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Nuscale Power, Dr. José Reyes; SVP and CEO Duke Energy Florida and Midwest, Alex Glenn; and COO of OUC, Jan Aspuru.

Our Keynote address is open to all attendees and exhibitors.

Andrew Winston will be the final keynote speaker at POWERGEN International 2023.

Following the keynote, the in-person full conference program and exhibit hall will open to registered attendees.

The show’s conference offerings this year – with eight educational tracks – are both broad and deep. Program tracks include Decarbonization, Unlocking Hydrogen’s Power Potential, Optimizing Plant Performance, Nuclear’s Small Revolution, Energy Storage Deployments and more.

For example, in our The Evolving Power Plant track, DTE Energy and MapEx will explain how machine learning and pattern recognition technology improved Combined Heat and Power (CHP) operations at a plant in Michigan. That session begins at 11:25 am.

Later that day, Dr. Richard Esposito of Southern Company will be presenting Federal section 45Q carbon capture credits explained, which will dive into how the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act expects to benefit carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. That session begins at 1 pm and is part of our Environmental and Emissions Controls track.

The next day, Black & Veatch will present on key learnings, hurdles, economics and design considerations across a portfolio of hydrogen energy storage and hydrogen co-firing projects. That session starts at 2:40 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

These are just some of the presentations leading the conversation for how power generators can evolve into cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Megasessions and networking

POWERGEN International will also feature three Megasessions on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 23. These are 90-minute, high-level industry panels that provide a birds-eye view of the triumphs and challenges happening in power generation. All registered POWERGEN attendees are welcome to attend mega sessions.

In one Megasession, Clarion Energy’s own David Wagman will lead the conversation about how utilities are designing and implementing programs that seek to diversify their supply chains and expand opportunities for historically disadvantaged firms.

In another highly anticipated panel, key OEMs will discuss the most cutting-edge technologies available for new and existing dispatchable power plants. Speakers will also highlight the anticipated impacts of newly implemented climate legislation in the U.S. and how it will further accelerate the energy transition.

In another session, panelists will discuss the new climate laws through their expertise in finance, energy planning, government, generation and delivery and energy industry transformation. Speakers will highlight opportunities for technologies like carbon capture, small modular reactors and advanced energy storage, along with some of the constraints and conflicts expected to arise as a result of the energy transition.

But before that, POWERGEN’s networking party – Power Play – will be Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023 from 5:15 – 6:45 pm at Icon Park. Network with your industry peers at our sports-themed event where there will be food, drinks, and games!  

The event concludes at 1PM on Thursday, February 23. That’s when the work begins on POWERGEN 2024. Save the dates on your calendar: January 23-25, 2024. We’ll see you in New Orleans!
